Applying Understanding- The Final Result

Room 5 and 6 worked collaboratively throughout the entire learning process during their Antarctica learning. They learnt a lot- some of the things shocking- like the amount of fish being taken from the penguins and the amount of rubbish in the water. 

They wanted to do something about it!

The children came up with all of these different ideas of how they could show their learning and help raise awareness. They brought the concept back to South Hornby School- where they could truly begin to make a difference. Then it was all made into a video. 

The children wanted to put this video onto our blogs so that it could be viewed worldwide and hopefully gain the attention they are looking for. 

Miss Quick and myself are so super proud of them and all the ideas that the children came up with to show their understanding and their enthusiasm towards helping the penguins.

Paper Mache Penguins- Final Product!

We finally finished our paper mache penguins! Check out the great results. 

The children worked really hard on them- it was a very long process.

We learned to be patient when the balloons deflated.

We learned to be careful when we were painting them.

We enjoyed helping each other when we needed help.

Building our "Wild Selves" for writing!

We are learning how to use adjectives in our writing, so in Room 6 this week, we tried something different for writing. 

A good way to remember the ones we want to use to describe something is by using a brainstorm. It is tricky for us to use a brainstorm, because it is new to us.

We built "Wild Self Monsters/Creatures" on the internet and then printed them off. 

Then, in our writing we had to describe our "Wild Self Monsters". We used brainstorms to help us.

Army Breakfast Visit

The children really enjoyed exploring all the gigantic Army vehicles that the Army brought with them to our Army breakfast morning. 

We even all got a ride in them, they go really fast! We had a blast.

Squares Maths Group

The squares maths group have been learning how to count on and backwards from a number to solve some tricky problems.

To help them, so far the children have been using hundreds boards

and laying out number line jellybeans.

Applying Understanding- Our Antarctica Learning

We are now up to the Apply Understanding part of our new Inquiry process.

This means that we have taken all the things we have learned about, formed heaps of "how might we..." questions and decided what we want to do about the issues we have found. 

The two main issues we have found are:

- people are over-fishing and the animals in Antarctica don't have enough food

and

- animals in Antarctica are dying because people are littering and the rubbish is getting into the ocean.

For the Apply Understanding stage, Room 6 and Room 5 are working together to build awareness about these issues. The children have decided what they want to do and are in the process of planning how they are going to raise awareness.

We are excellent at working together and communicating our ideas!
