Squares Maths Group

The squares maths group have been learning how to count on and backwards from a number to solve some tricky problems.

To help them, so far the children have been using hundreds boards

and laying out number line jellybeans.

Applying Understanding- Our Antarctica Learning

We are now up to the Apply Understanding part of our new Inquiry process.

This means that we have taken all the things we have learned about, formed heaps of "how might we..." questions and decided what we want to do about the issues we have found. 

The two main issues we have found are:

- people are over-fishing and the animals in Antarctica don't have enough food

and

- animals in Antarctica are dying because people are littering and the rubbish is getting into the ocean.

For the Apply Understanding stage, Room 6 and Room 5 are working together to build awareness about these issues. The children have decided what they want to do and are in the process of planning how they are going to raise awareness.

We are excellent at working together and communicating our ideas!

We have been working so hard with Paul in ukelele. We have learned some new chords and have become great at singing along while we are playing. It is still tricky for us to change really fast between chords, but we are getting better!

Circles Maths Group- Making Ten

The Circle's group have been learning about different ways to make 10.

Miss McLeod told us to draw two circles and count out 10 jellybeans.

Then she said "see how many ways you can make 10."

Look at all the ways we came up with.

Lucas also trialled some different numbers to see what he could come up with.

He found that 5 jellybeans + 4 more jellybeans makes 9 jellybeans.

Learning About Shapes!

At the end of Term 3 we had fun learning about shapes. We learned that there are lots of different shapes and they all have sides and corners except for a circle because it is round.

To show Miss McLeod our learning we...

Drew shapes and labeled them.

 We told Miss McLeod about what we were drawing and had to describe our shapes to her. We talked about the sides and corners of the different shapes we knew about.

We got given a different shape and then had to find someone with a similar shape to us. Miss McLeod got us to describe how the shapes were similar (they might not have been the same). Then we had to find someone with a different shape and talk about why they were different.

Then we got into pairs and described a shape we had hiding behind our back to our partner. Our partner had to make the shape that we described to them.

Using our knowledge of shapes we drew and made robots using some different shapes.
